'The Bill' Star Released From Hospital

The Bill producers have confirmed that actor Jeff Stewart was involved in an incident after being told he was axed.

Stewart, 52, who's played PC Reg Hollis since the ITV1 show began in 1984, is reported to have slashed his wrists in his dressing room after the meeting.

A TalkBack Thames spokeswoman said, "We can confirm an incident occurred following a meeting with Jeff, when it was discussed that Jeff's contract would not be renewed."

"Our primary concern is for Jeff Stewart's welfare," continued The Bill spokeswoman in a statement.

Stewart was taken to hospital after ambulance staff were called to the show's studios. He spent the night at St George's Hospital where he was kept overnight under observation.

The actor has now been released. He was suspended just before Christmas after a reported "furious outburst" on the show's set.

Stewart suffered an emotional breakdown in 2006 and was treated at The Priory. He later admitted reaching "rock bottom", but said there was "no way I would ever take my own life".
